Rest
I have a secret. Don’t you ever just want to take a break? Just get away? Leave the crazy world alone for a while?
I’ve read that the ancient Roman calendar had a nine-day week. Crazy. I have enough trouble getting through seven! Can you imagine slogging through nine days every week without a break? Whew. Exhausting.
I get so tired sometimes. Just worn down. Each day starts to blur into the last. I have to take a break. And more than just one holiday out of the year. That’s not enough. Don’t you get tired more often than once a year? Don’t you want to rest more often?
So about my secret – it keeps me from getting completely worn out. It helps me stay happy and cheerful, instead of yelling when I’m tired. It gives me an ‘out’ and charges my batteries.
Sooooo. . . Do you want to hear it? Do you want a strategy for letting go of your weary exhaustion? Are you ready? Okay.
Here’s my secret: I take a rest-day every week. Not a party day. Not a recuperate-from-my-hangover day. Just a rest-day. Every single week. Like clockwork.
By the end of the week I’m worn out. So the last day I just rest. I spend it with family and friends. We relax and get out in the sunshine. We eat a great dinner together. We laugh and talk and enjoy doing nothing – together. We take some time to learn more about God. It’s the best day of the week.
